Writing a cheque in France

Many more people pay by cheque in shops than is now common in the UK. In most supermarkets you just sign the cheque and hand it over and they will print it out for you. Still if you need to pay bills or smaller companies you will need to write a cheque at some point. The information on the cheques is basically the same it just comes in a different order

Payez contre ce cheque - is the amount in words across from that - the amount in figures (use a comma not a decimal point)

Underneath it will have

A - this is where you put the name of the person you are paying and another A just below the amount in figures this is where you are

and then directly below that Le which is where you put the date

French paperwork is not so bad. Just don't expect to get anything sorted out on your first visit anywhere and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Our French may be bad but we find we are fluent in spending money wherever we go in the world
